Most NKBA members agree that granite is the most popular countertop choice. Nature's variations of color make it unique - natural hardness and elegance make it a smart choice. Granite must be occasionally sealed and it's hardness can mean more glass breakage but the rich beauty of granite is undeniable.
Don't overlook manmade countertop products, though, like Silestone and Caesar Stone. They are much more affordable and are non-porous and durable - and come in all the colors of the rainbow and can mimic the look of natural stone and are non-porous.
Tile makes a stunning patterned and/or textured complement to countertops. Porcelain tiles have a much lower water absorption rate than ceramic tiles and are more suited to high traffic areas. Glazed porcelain tiles are much harder and have more wear- and damage-resistance than ceramic tiles, making them suitable for any residential and light commercial application. Use tiles to add accent color and graphic design to bare areas like backsplashes.
Natural stone tiles can vary greatly in density. Commonly used are slate, marble, limestone, travertine and granite.
