Fight Mold & Termites with Green Basement Systems

April - 2011

What is Mold and Why is it Harmful?

Mold thrives on fiberglass insulation in humid conditions.Water and moisture causes mold to grow on drywall.Mold can spread very quickly on organic building material.

What are molds?
Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and are spread and reproduced by making spores. They do not ingest their food but rather absorb nutrients by attacking dead organic matter or parasitizing living organisms. Unfortunately, many porous building materials such as drywall, wallpaper, and insulation are either constructed of, or contain some type of organic material.

Where are molds found?
Molds are found in virtually every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors, year round. Indoors, mold growth is encouraged by the high humidity level often found in basements.

How do molds affect people?
Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to molds, may have more severe reactions including fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs.

How can Green Basement Systems help?
Mold growth can be prevented by keeping basement humidity levels between 40% and 60%, and by finishing the walls with Green Basement Systems. Because EWS consists of inorganic materials has a superior mold resistance rating of R-10, it can keep your basement environment dry and healthy for years of enjoyment.  (Per ASTM D-3274 - evaluation of the coatings performance on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 indicating heavy growth and 10 indicating no visible growth)

Prevent Termite Damage

Termites love the Washington, DC area. Keep them from finding a nesting place in your home with EnviroTek Wall Systems.
Subterranean termites feed exclusively on wood and wood products containing cellulose. Termites have protozoa (microorganisms) in their intestines that provide enzymes to digest cellulose. Although termites are soft-bodied insects, their hard, saw-toothed jaws work like shears and are able to bite off extremely small fragments of wood, a piece at a time.

Termites often infest buildings and damage lumber, wood panels, flooring, sheetrock, wallpaper, plastics, paper products and fabric made of plant fibers. The most serious damage is the loss of structural strength.

EnviroTek Wall System's insulated core is manufactured with a patented process using an inorganic mineral that is a natural deterrent to termites. It is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has been thoroughly tested to be safe, noncorrosive and nontoxic to humans. And termites hate it -- another reason EnviroTek is the best choice for finishing your basement.
